Volkswagen Golf GTi W12-650 Video

I posted a link to a story on CarAdvice a while ago about the Wolkwagen Golf GTi W12-650. Well, Autocar.co.uk have managed to get their hands on it and take it for a spin around a track. It interesting to learn that it was put together in only eight weeks!

Keepon Dancing to Spoon

A mate at work just showed me this video which is too good not to pass on.

Basically it is a small doll named Keepon, designed by a Japanese researcher studying human-computer interaction. But in the video they have it dancing to the song “I Turn My Camera On” by the band Spoon.

Interesting story

This story was forwarded to me today and shows that people should leave things they don’t know about or don’t understand alone.

Give me a gun, and a bottle of Tequila…
I check my work email from home before I make my morning commute, so I can see what sort of maelstrom I’m about to walk into…If you can guess by the subject of the post, this one is a doozy.

From: $user who for whatever reason came in on Monday when no one else was in the building.
To: IT Dept.
Re: A/C constantly running.Hi Guys,

I came in today (Monday) to finish up a project I was working on before our big meeting with a potential client tomorrow, and I noticed that there were three or four large air conditioners running the entire time I was here. Since it’s a three day weekend, no one is around, why do we need to have the A/C running 24/7? With all the power that all those big computers in that room use, I doubt it is really eco-friendly to run those big units at the same time. And all computers have cooling fans anyway, so why put the A/C for the building in that room? I got a keycard from $facilitiesmanager’s desk and shut off the A/C units. I’m sure you guys can deal with it being warm for an hour or two when you come in tomorrow morning. In the future, let’s try to be a little more conscientious of our energy usage. Thanks.

RESULT:

Fatalities: Exchange Server, Domain Controllers, a few Sun boxes that I’m not sure of the usage.
Near-Fatalities: Phone Switch, Apps Servers.

Temperature of server room 7AM Tuesday Morning: 90 Degrees Fahrenheit.

Status of Employee who sent the above e-mail: Terminated.

We had a similar thing happen at work not too long ago when the air-conditioning systems in the server room failed. Luckily we caught it before any permanent damage was done.

OS X Zoom function.

This is a quick post that may help someone who is thinking of switching to a Mac sometime soon and wants to know what sort of stuff they can do in OS X. I’ll try to write some more about the cool features of OS X that I have found as I remember them.

Anyway, the zoom function. In OS X, if you hold the control button and use the scroll wheel on your mouse (or drag two fingers up or down your trackpad if you have a laptop) you can zoom the display. To use this feature you may have to enable it in system preferences.

I hadn’t really thought about it until just now, but this feature is pretty useful, especially when you are watching a video embedded in a web page that doesn’t have a zoom or full screen function, you just ctrl+scroll and you get the video at pretty much full screen :)

Also, if you are reading this, please leave a comment and let me know :)

Volkswagen Golf GT W12-650

I just saw a post on Caradvice that I just had to pass on.

Check out the post here…

This has to be one of the coolest looking cars I have seen in a while. I have always thought the new VW Golfs look pretty sexy, but the aggressive body kit on this concept is simply awesome. The performance isn’t too bad either. With two, mid mounted, V6 engines, it puts out slightly more power than a Lamborghini Murcielago.

If VW would have that body kit as an option on a GTI or R32, I would buy one in an instant.

Update! (finally)

Well, it’s been a while. Sorry for the delay in posting :/

It’s been a few weeks since I picked up the MacBook Pro and it has been pretty uneventful. I thought switching to Mac would be more difficult, but so far I have had no problems. I haven’t had the need to use Windows at all since getting the MBP and I have managed to find Apps to replace most of the programs that I use regularly on Windows. I’ll post some updates soon to write about what things that I have found annoying and things that I have surprised me.

I have updated the Software Essentials page with a few of the Apps and things that I have found useful.

See you soon :)

The MacBook Pro has arrived!

That’s right! Yesterday afternoon I picked up the new MacBook Pro :)

I’ve had about a day to play around with it and it is pretty cool. Hardware wise, the glowing keyboard is very sleek and it feels very nicely built, much better than most of the PC laptops I’ve used recently. The two finger scrolling and right-clicking with the touchpad is very cool, makes the touchpad much more usable, and means I won’t feel the need to have to drag an extra mouse around when I’m out and about.

As for the software, OS X is very nice. The are a few things that I’ll need to get used to, but overall it looks nice and most things just seem to work. A quick example is when I plugged in an external monitor this afternoon, OS X automatically detected it and extended the desktop onto that monitor without me having to do anything, which is something that I have never seen Windows do. I have found quite a few cool little applications that can do all sorts of stuff, but I’ll write about those another day.

MacBook Pro in ~2 weeks

So, yesterday I stopped by Infinite Systems yesterday and put down a deposit on a new MacBook Pro which I should get in about two weeks. The reason for the delay is because I wanted more ram and a bigger hard disk which makes it a custom order.

While we were there, Mum picked up a MacBook for herself as she was looking to buy a laptop.  She plans on traveling around the world with my sister at the end of the year, so this should come in handy.  I had a bit of fun mucking around with it this weekend and now i can’t wait for mine to arrive.
